Kelly sparks Whitman-Hanson boys’ basketball to win

January 12, 2019 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Stevie Kelly calls out a play.

The junior scored 10 points to go with six rebounds and six assists in the comeback win.

Whitman-Hanson Regional High junior Stevie Kelly is known for his defensive prowess on the soccer field, but he’s making a name for himself on the hardwood at point guard.

Kelly opened up his whole toolbox Friday night and the Panthers needed every bit of it to fend off Patriot League foe Silver Lake, 56-54.

“It was a pretty big win,” Kelly said. “Every Patriot League game is big for us.”

In a fourth quarter that the Panthers (8-2) entered down, 40-37, it was the 5-foot-10 Kelly, who scored five of his 10 points in the final frame to complement six rebounds and six assists on the night, right in the middle of the comeback.

With 7:33 remaining, Kelly drained a triple from the top of the arc, evening the score at 40.

After senior Cole Lewis (10 points) shot the Panthers ahead, 49-47, with a pair of 3-pointers, the Lakers (3-5) would pull even before Kelly passed to a streaking Rian Schwede inside the lane and he laid it in for two.

Clinging to a one-point lead late, Kelly jump cut into the lane for two, giving the Panthers a 55-52 lead, which was enough.

“He’s a tenacious player for sure,” said W-H head coach Bob Rodgers of Kelly. “He really gets after it. He’s a tremendous defender and a great leader on the floor. He had some big buckets for us down the stretch.”

With the help of six points in the first quarter from sophomore Cole LeVangie (team-high 16 points), the Panthers jumped out to a 18-10 lead after one.

The Lakers proceeded to outscore W-H, 18-8, in the following quarter to claim a 28-26 halftime edge.

Kelly sparked the Panthers out of halftime, motoring to the hoop for two, while picking up a foul in the process. His free throw put the Panthers up, 29-28.

Later in the frame, Kelly drove into the lane and kicked it out to a wide-open Ben Rice on the right side, who drained a three, giving the Panthers a 37-35 lead.

“It helps (me) with all the shooters we have,” Kelly said. “They work really hard in the offseason.”

The Panthers will visit Hanover next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

“We just got to get tougher around the hoop and play harder,” Kelly said.

O’Neill sends girls’ basketball past Duxbury, to fifth straight win

January 5, 2019 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Anna O’Neill hits the winner as the Panthers knock off Duxbury, 44-42.

It was a moment in the making.

Anna O’Neill’s name has not been called on much this season. In fact, she didn’t play at all in the two victories posted by the Whitman-Hanson Regional High girls’ basketball team at the Hoosac Valley Tournament.

But O’Neill got her opportunity Friday, and she made the most of it.

With 1:32 remaining, the senior guard rose up and drained a 3-pointer from the left side of the arc to send the Panthers past Patriot League Keenan Division rival Duxbury and to their fifth straight win.

“I knew she was going to get hot for us and she came up clutch for us,” said W-H head coach Jenna Olem.

Said O’Neil: “Coach kept telling me to work and work at practice and she gave me a shot and I hit it. It’s really exciting.”

After a pair of Dragons misses from the charity stripe, senior Meg Henaghan sealed the win with an offensive rebound.

W-H (5-2) trailed by as much as eight in the second quarter but cut its deficit to 25-23 at the half behind the scrappy play of junior Brittany Gacicia (eight points in first half).

“We knew it was going to be intense,” said W-H head coach Jenna Olem. “We got off to a slow start but they played really hard and there was just a lot of hustle plays at the end to keep us alive.”

The Panthers gained a 33-31 edge heading into the fourth on a late 3-pointer by senior captain Kathryn Dunn.

The Dragons (3-4) received a double-double from senior Sam Brennan (10 points, 14 rebounds) and 21 points from senior Teagan Curran.

Olem noted she was impressed by the play of senior Leah Badger and junior Hannah Damon.

The Panthers host Pembroke Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

“They’re finally finding what their strengths are and understanding what their roles are,” said Olem.

Panthers stem the Green Wave: W-H football finally hits 8-win mark, gobbles up Abington 16-0

The Panthers received big-time production from their seniors en route to a Turkey Day win over Abington.

When the Whitman-Hanson Regional High football team bowed out of the playoffs, the heartbreak didn’t last for long.

“After one or two days, we said, ‘We need to step it up and let last week go. The past is in the past. We’re now in the present and we need to move on,’” W-H senior captain Quinn Sweeney said of the team’s emotions after a 21-13 loss to North Attleboro in the first round of the playoffs.

Yes, the disappointment still lingered, but the Panthers still had something to play for, and that’s where they shifted their attention. With three games remaining in the regular season, the Panthers – 5-3 at the time – were aiming to win eight games, a feat the program hadn’t accomplished since 2011. Reaching the eight-win mark was personal, especially for most of the 21 seniors who watched this team go 7-4 for the past three seasons, and played major roles in the past two.

“The next week comes,” Sweeney said, “and we’re like, ‘Bishop Feehan. We have three more games together as a team. We need to finish strong.’”

The Panthers knocked off Feehan, 21-20, and fended off Bridgewater-Raynham, 15-14, the following week to put them one win away from No. 8 with a Thanksgiving tilt with rival Abington standing in their way. After three-plus hours of football in the subfreezing temperatures, they can finally call themselves an 8-3 football team.

Backed by a dominating defensive effort and a second-quarter scoring spurt, W-H shut out Abington (8-3), 16-0, in the 108th Thanksgiving Day meeting between the two.

Senior captain Ethan Phelps starred out of the backfield for W-H, carrying the ball 16 times for 148 yards.

Leading 6-0 after a Nate Beath (seven carries for 69 yards, TD) 6-yard TD run, Phelps took a handoff and darted 65 yards inside the 25-yard line. A few plays thereafter, senior Jake O’Brien drilled home a 23-yard field goal.

On the ensuing kickoff, a Green Wave fumble landed in the hands of Panthers senior Ryan Downing. On the next play, Phelps connected with senior captain Rian Schwede on a 25-yard TD to put the Panthers up 16-0 with less than a minute remaining in the first half.

“It feels so good,” said an emotional Phelps after the game. “I’m just really happy we could pull it together and go 8-3.”

W-H’s defense, keyed by three fumble recoveries by Beath, took care of business the rest of the way.

Driscoll stressed the importance of his strong senior class playing in their last ever high school football games.

“It’s all about the seniors,” Driscoll said. “The seniors carried this game today.”

Panthers shut out Presidents

October 6, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Panthers moved to 3-2 and 1-2 in the Patriot League with their first shutout since 2016 (41-0 vs. Quincy).

Whitman-Hanson Regional High football head coach Mike Driscoll couldn’t have asked for much more out of his team than he received Friday evening.

The Panthers stymied the Presidents offense, forcing them into five turnovers, while giving their defense headaches courtesy of six touchdowns in a dominating 39-0 Patriot League Keenan Division victory at Dennis M. O’Brien Field to snap a two-game losing streak.

“It was pretty good,” Driscoll said of the win. “They worked hard this week and really focused and it all paid off right there.”

W-H (3-2, 1-2) poured in its first 19 points while having the ball for all of 4:30.

Senior captain Rian Schwede shined for W-H receiving (30 yards), passing (11 yards) and rushing for (2 yards) TDs in the rout.

“It’s pretty cool,” Driscoll said of Schwede’s three-TD night. “We did a little experimenting with it. We tried it today and it (Schwede’s versatility) makes us a better team.”

It took the Panthers all of 52 seconds to find pay dirt when senior captain Ethan Phelps (8 carries for 92 yards) took the second play from scrimmage 18 yards for a score.

“Ethan ran great tonight,” Driscoll said. “He had an amazing night. If he can run like that, we’re in good shape.”

The ensuing Quincy (1-4, 1-3) possession was halted when Panthers junior Joe McStravick picked up a fumble to give them possession at the Presidents 40. Two plays later, junior signal-caller John Zeidan connected with Schwede on a 30-yard TD.

On the next Presidents drive, it was Panthers senior Nate Beath wreaking havoc in the backfield. After back-to-back tackles for loss, Beath scooped up a fumble recovery at the Quincy 11 to give W-H prime field position.

“Nate is an amazing athlete,” Driscoll said. “He does anything you ask him to do, so that helps. He’s just a super star when it comes to wanting to do whatever. Most kids wouldn’t want to play the nose, but he’s never questioned it.”

Schwede made sure to capitalize on the opportunity by hitting senior captain Jacob Nixon for an 11-yard score to push the Panthers ahead 19-0 with 10:50 remaining in the second quarter.

A 2-yard TD score from Beath with 2:43 remaining in the first half made it 26-0.

Third-quarter rushing scores from senior Billy Martell (7 yards) and Schwede capped the scoring at 39.

W-H is back in action Friday, Oct. 12 at home for senior night at 7 p.m. against league rival Silver Lake (1-4, 1-3).

“We got to carry this momentum into Silver Lake next week,” Driscoll said. “They’ll be excited, the parents will be excited, but we’ll take it one step at a time. But for now, this one feels pretty good.”

A flair for heroics: O’Brien hits game-winning field goal, W-H upends New Bedford

September 15, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Before the season even started, Mike Driscoll let his feelings be known of his senior kicker Jake O’Brien.

“Jake is a big, big, big part of our team,” said the eighth-year Whitman-Hanson Regional High football coach back in August. “I’ve never had a kid who you feel confident trotting him out there from 40, 45.”

On Friday night, Driscoll’s confidence was tested as was O’Brien’s poise.

After a Mike Connors run advanced the ball to the New Bedford 17 and two timeouts thereafter, O’Brien got his time to shine in front of a packed Dennis M. O’Brien Stadium.

With four seconds remaining and the score knotted at 6, the fourth-year varsity kicker knocked in a game-winning 34-yard field goal as time expired to send the Panthers to a 9-6 victory.

— Nate Rollins (@n_rollins1) September 15, 2018

“When it came time to do it, I wasn’t really thinking, just kind of instinct — all this practice time I’ve put in for a long, long time finally paid off for me tonight,” O’Brien said.

With 3:09 left, W-H (2-0) forced New Bedford (0-2) to punt after just a 17-second drive. On the punt, senior Billy Martell drew a catch interference call, which advanced the ball to the Whalers 40. Martell then bulldozed his way ahead 14 yards to get the Panthers inside New Bedford territory.

“I knew when Billy got that run we were in position there. He said we were good from inside 30, in warmups he was booming them in from like 45, so I felt pretty confident. He wanted the ball on the right hash and Mike (Connors) knew that, so Mike got it to the right hash and Jake came through.”

Junior John Zeidan – starting under center for senior quarterback Ethan Phelps (illness) – followed up Martell’s run by hitting senior Ryan Downing, who just had an interception, in stride down the left side for a 21-yard completion with time winding down to get into field goal range.

“I was a little nervous,” Zeidan said. “I knew what he had to do to win the game. I knew the plays.”

The Panthers struck first in this one with 37.4 seconds remaining in the first half when Connors plowed his way to pay dirt from 1 yard out. A 37-yard throw from Zeidan to senior captain Jacob Nixon keyed the drive.

Tru Williams countered for the Whalers in the third, hitting Joey Alverio on a 9-yard pitch and catch to even the score at 6.

W-H’s defense was sparked by senior captains Connors, Rian Schwede and Quinn Sweeney, along with Downing and seniors Nate Beath and Ryan Trongone.

The Panthers begin league play next week when they travel to Hingham (1-0) at 7 p.m.

“We’ll enjoy this for a little while and they we’ll get right back at it,” Driscoll said.

Defense dominant, offense outstanding in Whitman-Hanson football’s 41-13 victory over Marshfield

September 8, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Panthers football dominates Marshfield for season-opening victory.

Coming into Friday evening’s season opener, head coach Mike Driscoll was wary of his Panthers’ opponent — Marshfield.

The Rams have been a perennial high school football powerhouse, boasting a pair of Super Bowls (‘09 and ‘14) since Whitman-Hanson’s last (‘01). Also, a change at the helm over the offseason led to former Hingham head coach Chris Arouca, who’s had his success against Driscoll (2-1, including a two-game winning streak dating back to ’16), taking over the Rams.

However, it only took 11 minutes for that wariness to wear off as W-H jumped out to a two-touchdown lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 41-13 home triumph over Marshfield in a non-league tilt.

“It feels pretty good now that it’s over,” Driscoll said. “I knew that they were going to be ready to play and they really came to play tonight.”

Senior Panthers dual-threat quarterback Ethan Phelps led the offense, garnering 187 total yards and four touchdowns.

“It’s great to get a win under our belt,” Phelps said. “Everyone contributed.”

Phelps found pay dirt twice in a 5:34 span in the opening frame to put the hosts up 14-0 after one.

The grounding and pounding carried over into the second quarter when rushing scores from seniors Billy Martell and Nate Beath, of 10 yards and one yard, respectively, gave the Panthers a 27-0 cushion.

Phelps finished the quarter by flashing his arm, connecting with classmate Brandon Frawley for a 10-yard TD, to make it 34-0 at the half.

A 21-yard TD catch by CJ Guiliani from Phelps with 2:09 left in the third, coupled with a Jake O’Brien extra point, capped the Panthers’ offensive onslaught at 41.

“We try to spread it around,” Driscoll said. “We have so many weapons that we wanted to use them.”

Marshfield struck for two scores in the final frame.

Senior captain Quinn Sweeney sparked the Panthers on defense with 10 tackles, while classmate and fellow captain Rian Schwede recorded an interception and had three catches for 48 yards.

W-H will host New Bedford next Friday at 7 p.m. in another non-league contest.

“We’ll enjoy this tonight and come tomorrow, we’ll be on to New Bedford so it’s gonna be a challenge there itself — a big, strong team coming into town.”

Boys’ lacrosse rallies past Cardinal Spellman

April 13, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Panthers score five unanswered goals to down Cardinal Spellman for first victory of the season.

WHITMAN – It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.

The Whitman-Hanson Regional High boys’ lacrosse team erased an early two-goal deficit Friday afternoon and notched a 12-6 win over Cardinal Spellman to earn its first victory of the spring.

“To come in here and get a victory [gets] the ship going in the right direction,” W-H head coach Rob White said. “It’s a long season, we’re nowhere near where we can be at the end of it. Against Hingham (17-2 loss), we crawled, Scituate (13-6 loss) we walked and today we ran.”

The Panthers certainly did run … away with it in the second half. After Spellman drew within, 7-6, 1:40 into the third quarter, W-H (1-2) settled down.

With 3:39 remaining in the third period, junior Ryan Downing pushed the Panthers’ lead to 8-6. Senior captain Kyle Nehiley (two goals, two assists) made it a 9-6 advantage 3:25 later with a bullet from in the crease that beat Spellman goalie Sean Berry. The Panthers were not done there.

Junior Shane Ross (two goals, two assists) – from the 21-yard line – took a feed from Nehiley and ripped one past Berry to extend the W-H lead to 10-6 with 9:21 remaining in the game. Classmate Sean Joanis (two goals, two assists) poked home a rebound with 4:04 left to extend the Panthers’ advantage to 11-6.

“Patience,” White said of the message he relayed to his team at halftime. “We have a set offense and running down and just being hurky jerky, we need to set it up and execute it and once we started doing that, the goals started to come.

With 1:09 remaining, junior Mason Gorman (three goals, two assists) capped off the scoring and a hat trick with a blast that beat Berry, making it a 12-6 final.

“He had patience, he slowed everything down,” White said of Gorman, who received player of the game. “He was instrumental in a number of clears from his position down there at attack, so he was all over the place.”

However, the Cardinals, who defeated the Panthers twice last season, looked to be on their way doing that once again, as two quick tallies in the opening 2:40 sprung them in front 2-0.

Freshman Kyle Hamilton would kick start the W-H offense at the 7:59 mark of the first quarter with his first of two goals, which was followed by back-to-back tallies from Ross and Gorman, pushing the Panthers ahead 3-2.

“Even though we were down in the beginning, everybody was up [and] looked good,” White said.

After Spellman battled back to tie it at 3-3 and then 5-5, the momentum swayed back W-H’s way. With 6:45 remaining in the second quarter, Joanis, with one hand on the stick, snagged a pass from Gorman and drilled it past Berry to give the Panthers a 6-5 lead.

Freshman Aiden McCarthy made it 7-5 in the waning seconds of the first half with an acrobatic shot that somehow found the back of the net.

W-H junior goalie Mario Troiani (22 saves) made a pair of key stops late as part to help maintain the Panthers’ offensive onslaught.

“He’s got the attitude,” White said of Troiani. “We were warming up today and someone hit him in the stomach with a shot and he wasn’t even looking and he didn’t flinch. He’s got the attitude for net. He’s got a short memory.”

The Panthers will be back in action on Thursday, April 19 at 11 a.m. as they play in an annual four-team tournament.

“We’ve got a little mini tournament coming up and then after that I’ve got 60 goals back (with the return of Jake Long and Riley White),” White said. “They were first-line middies for us the last two years, so we’re going to be even more explosive.”

Panthers sink Harbormen

February 15, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Four weeks after suffering the program’s worst regular-season loss in over 10 years, a 71-45 defeat to Hingham, the Panthers rebounded for a 68-51 Patriot League Keenan Division win over the Harbormen.

HINGHAM – Bob Rodgers did something he doesn’t usually do.

On Friday evening, with 15 minutes left to spare before the opening tip off of the Whitman-Hanson Regional High boys’ basketball team’s game against Hingham, the 18-year head coach took a backseat for a moment.

He sent his seniors into the locker room to preach to his team, while he remained on the bench.

“I told them, ‘This is your team, you tell them,’ Rodgers said.

‘It’s not just about you playing well, it’s about getting the team ready to play.’”

The move seemed to have paid dividends. Four weeks after suffering the program’s worst regular-season loss in over 10 years, a 71-45 defeat to Hingham, the Panthers rebounded for a 68-51 Patriot League Keenan Division win over the Harbormen.

“It’s just a testament to a team of resiliency,” Rodgers said. “I give the kids all the credit in the world. I’m really proud of my guys.”

The Panthers’ triumph denied Hingham (14-2, 11-2) a share of the league title — at least for now.

When the Panthers (13-4, 11-2) needed a bucket, they turned to their senior captain Sean Leahy, who finished the night with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds.

“We wanted it, we just wanted to win tonight,” Leahy said.

Leahy poured in 13 points during the first half as W-H took a 34-30 lead into the break.

Down 35-34, a minute into the third quarter, the Panthers would go on a 10-1 run – sparked by five points from senior captain Jacob Hanson Bartlett (13 points, 5 rebounds) – to pull ahead 44-36 with 4:21 remaining in the frame.

With four minutes remaining, Tajh Hunter sliced to the hoop for two and drew a foul. After the free-throw make, W-H was ahead, 57-42.

Hunter, who finished the contest with nine points and five boards, played an integral role in W-H’s defensive scheme. The junior guard limited Hingham’s John Gates, who had 14 points in the two clubs’ previous meeting, to just one point (free throw with 3:11 remaining in the third quarter).

“It was definitely a tough matchup, he’s definitely one of the best shooters in the league,” Hunter said. “I just moved my feet, tried to stay with him and tried not to let him get in my head.”

If W-H is victorious Friday against Quincy and Hingham beats Plymouth North on Thursday, the two teams will share the league title.

Scoreboard debut

January 11, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Freshman Emily McDonald has been logging significant minutes at forward for the Panthers, and Sunday evening at Hobomock Arenas, she collected her first career varsity goal.

PEMBROKE — With a rash of offensive production gone from last season, opportunities have arisen for many younger players on the Whitman-Hanson/Silver Lake high school girls’ hockey team.

One of those younger players getting the chance to shine is Emily McDonald, a freshman from Whitman. McDonald has been logging significant minutes at forward for the Panthers, and Sunday evening at Hobomock Arenas, she collected her first career varsity goal.

With 6:41 remaining in the third period, McDonald, from inside the blue line, blasted a shot on the La Salle Academy/Moses Brown goalie Asia Porter, and it found the back of the net.

“[It felt] good,” McDonald said of her goal.

WHSL head coach Kevin Marani said McDonald had been snakebitten a bit this season – hitting the post on a few chances in a pair of prior games – so he was happy to see her have something to show for her savvy play.

“She’s a smart, smart player,” Marani said. “She’s a good kid, tries hard. It was nice to see her finally break the ice.”

McDonald’s tally was one of three WHSL (0-7) goals in an 8-3 loss to La Salle Academy/Moses Brown (10-0-1).

The first came just 52 seconds into the contest when sophomore defenseman Natalie Nemes (Kingston) worked her way up the boards, to left circle and flicked a shot that beat Porter right over her left shoulder, making it 1-0.

The advantage was WHSL’s first all season.

“It was a nice celebration,” Marani said. “We needed a lead, we deserve it, we work hard.”

Unfortunately for WHSL, it would not last as LA/MB knotted the score at 1-1 with 7:11 remaining in the first period when Alexa Morra blasted a wrist shot past freshman goalie Kat Gilbert (Halifax).

Less than a minute later, LA/MB went ahead 2-1 and that’s where it stood after the opening frame.

The second stanza is where the contest would get away from the Panthers as 41 seconds into it, the visitors pushed ahead 3-1 when Grayson Goolgasian found twine. Tallies by Samantha Marsh and Jennifer Rickard gave LA/MB a four-goal cushion through two periods.

With 6:41 remaining in the final stanza, McDonald’s tally drew WHSL within 6-2.

After another LA/MB goal, WHSL’s Meagan Elwood (Kingston) found the back of the net with 2:31 left, making it 7-3.

However, it took LA/MB 14 seconds to respond as it made it 8-3 and that’s where it would stand.

WHSL will be back on the ice Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. against Haverhill/Pentucket/ North Andover at The Bog Ice Arena in Kingston.

“I think we’re getting it,” WHSL head coach Kevin Marani said. “We had a bunch of breakdowns. They’re trying hard. Today was a good game, they played hard.”

A win for Lori: Panthers erupt for five goals in third period to win one for Sawtelle

January 11, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

WINNING FOR LORI: The W-H Panthers wore specially designed memorial jerseys for the Saturday, Jan. 6 Lori Sawtelle Memorial Game. / Photo by: Sue Moss

The Whitman-Hanson Regional High boys’ hockey team played with heavy hearts Saturday.

ROCKLAND – Saturday evening was Lori Sawtelle Night as the Whitman-Hanson Regional High boys’ hockey team honored the late mother of its captain, Ryan Sawtelle.

The team broke out its black jerseys and donned an oval “LS” decal on the top right shoulder, all of which were part of the tribute to Lori, who lost her battle with cancer last March. After a brief pre-game announcement to remember Lori while showing support to her family, the puck was set to drop.

On the ice, the Panthers weren’t about to be denied — not on Lori’s night — as they rallied behind their captain and his family for an emotional 6-1 victory over Plymouth North at Rockland Ice Rink.

“We definitely knew what we were playing for tonight and this whole season, too, so it meant a lot,” Sawtelle said.

When W-H (4-3-1, 1-2-1 Patriot League) took the ice for the third period with the score reading 1-1, the feeling in the rink was palpable — it was going to get the job done.

With roughly nine minutes remaining, senior assistant captain Korey Howard (one goal and two assists) made sure that happened by blasting a wrist shot past Plymouth North (3-3-2, 2-1-1) goalie Chris Kearney to push the Panthers in front 2-1.

“We did it,” Howard said of his initial thought after the goal.

Nearly a minute later, with 8:22 remaining, freshman Kevin Willis poked one home, pushing W-H’s lead to 3-1.

Senior assistant captain Alex Uva enhanced W-H’s advantage to 4-1 with 6:39 left, potting one past Kearney.

“It was awesome,” Uva, who said this was the most packed he’s seen the Rockland Ice Rink, explained. “The atmosphere tonight was great and getting that goal in front of all these fans and for Ryan and his family was awesome.”

The Panthers’ offensive onslaught continued as tallies by junior Owen Manning and sophomore Ed Collins capped a five-goal period.

After falling behind 1-0, W-H drew even at the 8:05 mark of the second period as a blast by Sawtelle caused a pair of rebounds, one of which was slapped in by sophomore Chris Stoddard.

“I knew that I wanted to come out strong and show everyone who we are and what we’re going to do tonight,” Sawtelle, who finished the night with three assists, said.

Uva, who ended the contest with a goal and three assists, said his mindset coming into this one was a simple one.

“Get the win for Lori, she was a great person and I’d do anything for the Sawtelle family,” he said.

Sawtelle said the outpouring of support he received from his teammates, coaches and community meant a lot.

“It shows who’s there for me, definitely a lot of support for me and helped me play through this game,” Sawtelle said

The victory also snapped a two-game Panthers losing streak, to boot.

W-H returns to action Saturday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. against Abington at Rockland Ice Rink.
