Cup full of action

The regular season has come to a close and the postseason has begun. And with no state tournament to play in, the Whitman-Hanson Regional High athletic teams took their shots at the Patriot Cup.


Boys’ cross country, bolstered by senior captain Theo Kamperides’ (16:49) first-place finish, took first at the Patriot League championships on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Senior captain Liam Cafferty (fifth, 17:40), junior Nathan Tassey (seventh, 17:58) and senior captain Chris MacDonald (ninth, 18:15) finished in the top 10.

Girls’ cross country closed its season with a sixth-place finish at the Patriot League championship on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Junior captain Myah Kamperides paced W-H, finishing ninth overall with a time of 21:01.

Field hockey (2-9-1) shutout Marshfield, 1-0, in the first round of the Patriot Cup on Monday, Nov. 9. Junior forward Olivia Phelps found the back of the net, breaking a scoreless tie five minutes into the third quarter, off a feed from senior captain Lauren Clark. … On Wednesday, W-H’s run came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Silver Lake.

Boys’ soccer (6-7) kicked off cup play with a 2-1 win over Hanover on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Senior captain Brendan Nehiley and junior Jayden Stafford had the Panthers’ goals. … On Thursday, the W-H dropped a heartbreaker to Duxbury, 3-2, in double overtime. Senior captain Peyton Collins had both goals in the loss.

Girls’ soccer (9-2-2) dropped a 3-1 decision to Scituate on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Junior Ava Melia had the lone goal. … The Panthers lived to see another day though, since they were the two seed in the Keenan Division and made the most of it, knocking off Plymouth North, 1-0, in overtime on Saturday. Senior captain Alexis Billings scored the goal off a shot from fellow senior Anna Sullivan. Senior captains Kylee Colcough and Reese Codero combined for the shutout.

Girls’ volleyball (3-10) dominated Pembroke, 3-0, in the first round on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The set scores were: 25-18, 25-16 and 25-16. Juniors Abby Martin and Lily Welch paced the Panthers with six kills apiece. … On Thursday, W-H was knocked out by Plymouth North, 3-0. The set scores were: 21-25, 23-25 and 22-25. Senior captains Caileen Hurley and Sophia Berardinelli were standouts in the defeat.

Ups and downs on the playing fields in Week 5

The fall sports season is beginning to wind down at Whitman-Hanson Regional High.


Here’s a look back on Week 5:

Boys’ cross country (5-0), led by a first-place finish from senior captain Theo Kamperides (16:34), edged Marshfield, 26-29, on Wednesday, Oct. 28 to capture the Patriot League Keenan Division title for the first time since 2013. Senior captain Liam Cafferty (17:04) placed fourth, junior Nathan Tassey (17:09) came in fifth, while senior captain Chris MacDonald (17:37) came across the finish line sixth. 

Girls’ cross country (2-3) fell to Marshfield, 17-46, on Tuesday. Oct. 27. Junior captain Myah Kamperides (20:20) paced W-H with a fourth-place finish. 

Field hockey (0-7-1) suffered a 5-1 setback against Plymouth North on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Junior Olivia Phelps had the Panthers’ goal. 

Boys’ soccer (4-4) beat Silver Lake, 2-1, on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Sophomore Manny Osorio and junior Jack Allen scored for W-H, both coming on assists from senior captain Peyton Collins. Senior Randy Elfman had some key saves late. 

Girls’ soccer (7-0-1) shut out Silver Lake, 3-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Junior Olivia Borgen scored twice and sophomore Kayla Cassidy added a goal in the win. Senior captains Kylee Colclough and Reese Codero split the duties in net to earn the shutout.

Girls’ volleyball (2-7) opened the week with a 3-0 sweep over Silver Lake on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The set scores were: 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18. Junior captain Lily Welch paced W-H with 10 kills, junior Abby Martin tallied nine, while senior libero Sarah Byers racked up 12 digs. Senior captain Sophia Berardinelli recorded 27 assists, a season-high for the setter. … On Friday, W-H was shut out by Plymouth North, 3-0. The set scores were: 20-25, 22-25 and 5-25. Junior Anna Stone and Byers had 16 serve receives apiece in the loss.

Week 4 in review

Week 4 is in the past at Whitman-Hanson Regional High.


Here is a look back:

Boys’ cross country (4-0) remained perfect, racing past Duxbury, 16-39, on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Senior captain Theo Kamperides took first overall with a time of 15:24. Senior captain Liam Cafferty (2nd, 15:33), junior Nathan Tassey (3rd, 16:17), senior captain Chris MacDonald (4th, 16:22) and junior Gordon Johnson (6th, 17:07) also scored in the win. 

Girls’ cross country (2-2) took the top five places and topped Duxbury, 15-45, on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Junior captain Myah Kamperides won the race with a time of 20:24, while senior Izzy Amado (2nd, 20:48), junior captain Anna Flynn (3rd, 21:22), freshman Sky Bucci-Anderson (4th, 21:58) and senior captain Bryn Miller (5th, 22:06) rounded out the top five. 

Field hockey (0-6-1) was shut out by Silver Lake, 2-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 20. … On Thursday, Todd Humphrey’s team picked up its first point of the season, with a 2-2 tie against Duxbury. Senior captain Lauren Clark and junior Olivia Phelps had the Panthers’ goals. 

Boys’ golf (1-10) dropped a 233-256 decision to Silver Lake on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Senior captain Aidan Miller shot a 3-over par 37 in the loss. … Then, on Wednesday, Brian Dempsey’s club wrapped up its season with a 224-258 loss to Marshfield. Miller finished his high school career with a birdie putt, to end the day with a 2-over par 36. Junior Pat McBroom shot a 6-over par 40. 

Boys’ soccer (3-4) was edged by Duxbury, 2-1, on Monday, Oct. 19. Senior captain Peyton Collins fed junior Jack Allen tying the score at 1-1, before the Dragons scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick in the third quarter. … On Friday, W-H routed North Quincy, 8-0. Senior captain Brendan Nehiley netted a hat trick, while classmate Joel Arsenault had two goals and an assist. Junior Ethan Smith and senior Randy Elfman combined for the shutout in net. 

Girls’ soccer (6-0-1) defeated Duxbury, 4-1, on Monday, Oct. 19. Junior Skylar Jordan, sophomore Ella Nagle, junior Olivia Borgen and senior captain Alexis Billings scored in the win. … On Wednesday, David Floeck’s team beat Marshfield, 4-1. Freshman Makenna Marshall snapped a 1-1 tie in the third quarter with a score from 20 yards out. Billings, Borgen and sophomore Kayla Cassidy also scored for W-H.

Girls’ volleyball (1-6) dropped a 3-1 decision to Duxbury on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The set scores were: 12-25, 9-25, 25-18 and 15-25. Junior Abby Martin (seven kills) and Anna Strone (five kills) were standouts in the loss. … The Panthers closed the week with a 3-1 loss to Marshfield. The set scores were: 15-25, 25-17, 12-25 and 17-25.

Week 3: Boys’ cross country, girls’ soccer rise to the occasion

Rain wrought havoc on part of the Week 3 action at Whitman-Hanson Regional High, but it couldn’t stop both the boys’ cross country and girls’ soccer teams from soaring to wins.


Boys’ cross country (3-0) ran past Hingham, 21-34, on Thursday, Oct. 15. Senior captain Theo Kamperides (16:57) and junior Nathan Tassey (17:21) finished first and second overall to pace the Panthers to victory. 

Girls’ cross country (1-2) fell to Hingham, 22-39, on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Junior captain Myah Kamperides placed second with a time of 20:48 in the loss. 

Field hockey (0-5) was shut out by Hanover, 2-0, on Thursday, Oct. 15. Senior captain Noelle Cornetta was stout on defense in the defeat.

Boys’ golf (1-8) was upended by Plymouth North, 266-278, on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Senior captain Aidan Miller and junior Chris Ross both shot a 44 in the loss. … The next day, W-H was clipped by Duxbury, 228-237. Senior Graham Stewart carded a 3-over par 37 and tied for match medalist in the setback.

Boys’ soccer (2-3) fell to Silver Lake, 3-1, on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Senior captain Brendan Nehiley had the W-H goal. … On Friday, Nehiley scored right before the half and Dave Leahy’s club held on for the 1-0 win against Plymouth North. 

Girls’ soccer (4-0-1) scored three second-half goals to top Silver Lake, 5-2, on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Junior Olivia Borgen had two goals in the win, while sophomore Kayla Cassidy, senior Liv Montes and junior Kelsee Wozniak added single tallies. … On Friday, Borgen found the back of the net for her second goal of the night with three minutes remaining to send W-H past Plymouth North, 3-2. Senior captain Alexis Billings also scored, while junior Ava Melia turned in a full 80 minutes on defense.

Girls’ volleyball (1-4) rallied past Silver Lake, 3-1, on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Senior captain Sophia Berardinelli (26 assists) and junior captain Lily Welch (14 kills) led the way for the Panthers. … On Thursday, W-H was swept by Plymouth North, 3-0. The set scores were: 19-25, 23-25 and 14-25.

Week 2 heats up at W-H

The fall season is starting to heat up at Whitman-Hanson Regional High. 


Here is a look back on Week 2:

Boys’ cross country (2-0) ran past Plymouth North, 18-41, on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Senior captains Theo Kamperides (15:00) and Liam Cafferty (15:12) finished first and second, respectively. 

Girls’ cross country (1-1) placed four of the top five runners to down Plymouth North, 19-38, on Wednesday, Oct. 6. Junior captain Myah Kamperides led the way with a first-place finish at 18:16, while senior Izzy Amado (2nd, 18:52), junior Anna Flynn (4th, 19:57) and senior captain Bryn Miller (5th, 20:20) finished in the top five. 

Field hockey (0-4) suffered a 2-1 setback to Duxbury on Monday, Oct. 5. Junior Olivia Phelps scored the goal for W-H. … On Wednesday, the Panthers were blanked by Hingham, 3-0. … W-H capped its week with a 3-1 loss on the road against Notre Dame Academy (of Hingham) on Friday. Senior captain Lauren Clark had the goal off assists from Phelps and classmate Lauren Dunn.

Boys’ golf (1-6) was clipped by Silver Lake, 262-267, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Panthers senior captain Aidan Miller led all scorers with a 2-over par 38. … Brian Dempsey’s squad finally got into the win column on Wednesday, topping North Quincy, 256-272, on the strength of a 4-over-par-38 showing from Miller. … On Thursday, W-H lost to Hingham, 250-279, despite junior Pat McBroom carding a 3-over par 39. 

Boys’ soccer (1-2) allowed four second-half goals and fell to Marshfield, 4-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. … On Thursday, W-H dropped a heartbreaker to Hingham, 1-0, on a Harbormen goal in the 77th minute.

Girls’ soccer (2-0-1) received goals from junior Kelsee Wozniak and sophomore Kayla Cassidy en route to a 2-1 victory over Marshfield on Tuesday, Oct. 6. … On Thursday, Wozniak found the back of the net with 3:37 remaining, as W-H rallied to tie Hingham, 2-2. Sophomore Ella Nagle had the first Panthers goal. 

Girls’ volleyball (0-3) dropped a nailbiter to Marshfield, 3-2, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The set scores were: 17-25, 25-12, 25-24, 25-27 and 13-15. Junior Abby Martin led W-H with eight kills, while junior captain Lily Welch registered seven. Senior captain Sophia Berardinelli posted six aces and 22 assists. … On Thursday, the Panthers were swept by Hingham, 3-0. Welch paced W-H in kills (five) and blocks (eight).

Off and running: First week of fall sports in the books

The first full week of this unprecedented fall athletic season at Whitman-Hanson Regional High is in the books. 


Here is a look back on the action:

Boys’ cross country (1-0) opened its season with a 16-45 victory over Silver Lake on Friday, Oct. 2. W-H senior captain Theo Kamperides finished first overall with a time of 16:51. Fellow senior captain Liam Cafferty (17:55) and junior Nathan Tassey (17:59) finished second and third, respectively. 

Girls’ cross country (0-1) was edged by Silver Lake, 25-32, on Thursday, Oct. 1. Junior captain Myah Kamperides paced the Panthers with a third-place finish at 20:59.

Field hockey (0-1) lost its opener to Silver Lake, 2-1, on Thursday, Oct. 1. Junior forward Lauren Dunn tied the game at 1-1 in the third before the Lakers pulled ahead late in the fourth quarter. 

Boys’ golf (0-4) had a busy week. On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Brian Dempsey’s squad was upended by Marshfield, 251-283. Senior Graham Stewart was a bright spot for W-H in the loss, registering two birdies. … On Wednesday, the Panthers fell to Plymouth North, 249-263. W-H senior captain Aidan Miller tied for match medalist, shooting a 5-over par 39. … The Panthers capped the week with a 232-275 setback against Duxbury on Thursday. Miller shot a 4-over par 40 in the loss. 

Boys’ soccer (1-0) collected a 2-1 win on the road over Duxbury Friday, Oct. 2. Senior captain Peyton Collins had a goal and an assist, while junior Jack Allen had the other tally. 

Girls’ soccer (1-0) blanked Notre Dame Academy (of Hingham), 4-0, to kick off its season on Friday, Oct. 2. Junior Kelsee Wozniak scored twice in the win, while sophomore Kayla Cassidy and junior Lauryn Fostello also had goals. Senior captains Kylee Colclough and Reese Codero combined for the shutout in net. 

Girls’ volleyball (0-1) was swept by Notre Dame Academy (of Hingham), 3-0, on Thursday, Oct. 1. The set scores were: 24-26, 18-25 and 12-25. Juniors Izzy Baker and Abby Martin were standouts in the defeat.

Hoop squads on fire in Week 8

Week 8 has concluded at Whitman-Hanson Regional High, so let’s take a look back.


Boys’ basketball (15-2) won its 13th straight, topping Plymouth South, 62-35, on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Seniors Liam Keane and Tommy Vassil both had 12 points to pace the Panthers.

Girls’ basketball (12-5) beat Plymouth South, 41-29, on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Sophomore Abby Martin (five points) sparked a fourth-quarter run, when she dove on a loose ball and fired a cross-court pass, while still on the ground, and found senior Brittany Gacicia (13 points) for a layup. … On Friday, Mike Costa’s club pulled away from Duxbury, 63-53. Gacicia (19 points) and senior captain Olivia Martin (15 points) led the way on senior night. Junior Rylie Harlow added 15 points in the win.

Boys’ indoor track finished sixth at the Patriot League championship on Friday, Feb. 7. Junior Graham Stewart had a second-place showing in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.38.

Girls’ indoor track also placed sixth at the Patriot League championship on Friday, Feb. 7. Sophomore Myah Kamperides placed first in the 2-mile run with a time of 11:49.

Boys’ hockey (12-5-1) fell to Duxbury, 5-2, on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Freshman Matt Solari and senior Eddie Collins had the W-H goals. … On Sunday, W-H tied Dedham, 1-1. Senior captain Chris Stoddard has the goal and junior netminder Bobby Siders starred in net.

Girls’ hockey (7-8) held off North Quincy, 9-7, on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Freshman Shea Kelleher (Kingston) led the offensive barrage with five goals and an assist. Junior captain Emily McDonald (Whitman) scored a goal and added three helpers.

Gymnastics capped the season scoring a 126 at the Patriot League meet on Saturday, Feb. 8. Senior captain Sarah Bombardier led the way with an 8.8 in the all-around, which was good for eighth.

Wrestling (11-8) beat Plymouth North, 58-21, on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Senior captain Steve Brooks (160 pounds) and classmates Tyler Cullinan (170 pounds) and Mike Gardner (182 pounds) all registered pins in the win. … On Saturday, W-H capped the dual-meet season by beating Bristol Plymouth/Coyle-Cassidy (54-20) and Everett/Malden (66-15), while falling to Norwood (45-30). Brooks tallied three pins on the day.

Heading into the homestretch

The winter sports season is heading into the homestretch at Whitman-Hanson Regional High, with a few teams having already wrapped up play.


Here is how a Week 7 turned out:

Boys’ basketball (14-2) kept rolling along, handing Scituate its second loss of the season, 75-45, Tuesday, Jan. 28. Junior Nate Amado led the balanced offensive attack with 17 points. … On Friday, W-H torched Plymouth North, 75-57. Senior captain Stevie Kelly paced the offense with 20 points.

Girls’ basketball (10-5) topped Scituate, 58-45, Tuesday, Jan. 28, to punch its ticket to the tournament. Junior Reese Codero put up a team-high 14 points in the win. … On Friday, W-H was tripped up by Plymouth North, 47-42.

Boys’ hockey (12-4) was shut out by Plymouth North, 2-0, on Wednesday, Jan. 29. … On Saturday, senior captain Chris Stoddard scored with 19 seconds remaining to lift W-H past North Quincy, 4-3. … On Sunday, senior assistant captain Adam Solari netted a hat trick to pace the Panthers over Scituate, 4-1.

Girls’ hockey (6-8) toppled Marshfield, 8-3, on Thursday, Jan. 30. Senior captain Alyssa Murphy (Kingston) struck for four goals, while junior captain Emily McDonald (Whitman) also found the back of the net. … On Saturday, the co-op was clipped by Mansfield/Foxboro/Oliver Ames, 3-2. Murphy had both goals.

Gymnastics (0-10) fell to Plymouth, 129.6-117.7, on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Senior captain Sarah Bombardier scored an 8.6 on the vault, while junior Savannah Poirier posted an 8.4 score on the floor routine.

Girls’ swimming/diving (5-3) fell to Cohasset, 99-76, on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Wrestling (8-7) opened the week with a 46-30 loss to Duxbury on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Sophomore Joe Boss (pin in 2:50 at 106 pounds), junior captain Damari Goldsmith-Greene (pin in 4:16 at 138 pounds), sophomore Pat Collett (pin in :55 at 152 pounds), senior Mike Gardner (pin at 182 pounds) and freshman Maddox Colclough (pin in 3:57 at 195 pounds) posted wins for W-H. … On Saturday, W-H came away with a clean sweep against Nauset (58-16), Rockland (52-27) and Hanover (53-23). Boss, senior captain Steve Brooks (160 pounds), Gardner and Goldsmith-Greene and junior Myles McInnis (126 pounds) all went 3-0 on the day.

Keeping score in Week 5

From the pool to the mat, Week 5 is in the books at Whitman-Hanson Regional High.


Here is a look back:

Boys’ basketball (9-2) routed Silver Lake, 66-36, Tuesday, Jan. 14. Juniors Cole LeVangie (15 points) and Nate Amado (12 points) combined for 27 points in the victory. … On Friday, W-H handed Marshfield just its second loss of the season, 82-68. Senior captain Stevie Kelly exploded for a triple-double, scoring 24 points, dishing out 11 assists and racking up 10 boards.

Girls’ basketball (8-3) topped Silver Lake, 54-29, Tuesday, Jan. 14. Senior Brittany Gacicia led the offense with 15 points, while junior Rylie Harlow anchored the defense. … On Friday, Harlow pumped in 11 second-half points to rally the Panthers past Marshfield, 49-41.

Gymnastics (0-7) fell to Hanover, 133.3-120.35, Friday, Jan. 17. Senior captain Sarah Bombardier tallied an 8.6 on the vault and freshman Riley Getchell led the way on the beam with a 7.85.

Boys’ hockey (7-3) skated past Southeastern/West Bridgewater, 2-1, Monday, Jan. 13. Senior assistant captain Adam Solari and his brother Matt, a freshman, provided the goals. … On Wednesday, the Solari brothers each had a goal as too did both senior captain Chris Stoddard and sophomore John Ward in a 4-1 win over Silver Lake. Junior Bobby Sidders registered 20 saves in the win.

Girls’ hockey (5-5) clobbered North/Quincy, 7-2, Wednesday, Jan. 15. Senior captain Alyssa Murphy (Kingston) had two goals and junior captain Emily McDonald (Whitman) also scored.

Boys’ swimming/diving (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Bishop Stang, 88-73, Tuesday, Jan 14. Junior Brian Pham posted a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.43). 

Girls’ swimming/diving (5-1) posted a win over Bishop Stang, 97-78, Tuesday, Jan 14.  Senior captain Maddie Navicky had victories in the 100 free (1:01.26), 100 back (1:12.78) and was part of the victorious 400 free relay.

Wrestling (5-3) bested Pembroke, 48-34, Wednesday, Jan. 15. Freshman Maddox Colclough led the way with a fall in 30 seconds at 220 pounds. … On Saturday, W-H picked up wins over Josiah Quincy, 42-33, and Northbridge, 64-12, but fell to Oliver Ames, 46-33. The Panthers were led by three pins apiece from senior captain Steve Brooks (160 pounds) and classmate Mike Gardner (182 pounds).

Winter teams hitting stride

The second full week of the winter sports season is in the books at Whitman-Hanson Regional High.


Here’s how it played out:

Boys’ basketball (4-2) took two of three during its trip to Bradenton, Fla. for the Falcon Christmas Classic. On Thursday, Dec. 26, senior captain Stevie Kelly dropped 23 points, but W-H fell to Sycamore (Ohio), 72-65. … Bob Rodgers’ club bounced back on Friday, defeating Mount Dora (Florida), 67-39. Senior captain Ben Rice paced the offense with 17 points, while Kelly and junior Nate Amado added 14 points apiece. … The Panthers capped theirs with a 69-61 victory over East Bay (Florida) on Saturday. Rice poured in 21 points, Amado had 17 and junior Cole LeVangie (12 points, 12 rebounds) had a double-double.

Girls’ basketball (4-2) was also down in Bradenton and came out on top in the Falcon Holiday Classic. In first-round play on Thursday, Dec. 26, W-H cruised to a 54-23 victory over Lakewood Ranch (Florida). Senior Brittany Gacicia erupted for 23 points in the win. … On Thursday, it was an upward battle for the Panthers against St. Stephen’s (Florida) as they trailed the entire game until late in the fourth quarter when senior captain Olivia Martin (14 points) drilled a three-pointer to send W-H to the championship game. … And in the championship game on Saturday, Zephyrhills (Florida) proved no match for Mike Costa’s club, which handed it a 66-29 defeat. Junior Reese Codero scored 22 points in the victory. Codero and Gacicia were named to the all-tournament team.

Boys’ hockey (3-1) made it back-to-back Cashman Tournament titles. In the tourney opener Thursday, Dec. 26, senior assistant captain Adam Solari, classmate Eddie Collins and junior Jack Allen lit the lamp to lead W-H past Silver Lake, 3-1. Junior goaltender Bobby Siders starred in net. … Then, on Saturday, Solari erupted for a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Rockland in the final. Sophomore Erik Dean collected the victory in net.

Girls’ hockey (1-4) fell to Billerica/Chelmsford, 6-1, on Monday, Dec. 23. Junior Ellie Grady (Kingston) had the WHSL goal. … The co-op bounced back on Saturday, though, shutting out Plymouth North/South, 5-0. Junior captain Emily McDonald (Whitman) netted her first goal of the season, freshman Bridget Cardarelli (Kingston) struck for two goals, while senior captain Alyssa Murphy (Kingston) and junior Neve Corkery (Kingston) also found the back of the net. Junior Kat Gilbert (Halifax) recorded her first career shutout.
