Boys’ hockey wins a pair in Week 4

Make it two straight wins for the W-H boys’ hockey team. 

After it was knocked out of the Cashman Tournament by Rockland on Monday, Dec. 27, the Panthers bounced back with a shut out win over Rockland, 4-0, in the consolation game Wednesday, which it followed up with a 2-1 victory over Pembroke on Saturday. 

“We haven’t had the best start that we wanted,” said W-H head coach Rob Peters. “We had a lot of guys returning and we’d like to be a little better than where we’re at. The Silver Lake game, we just didn’t show up, didn’t have a great game and they answered the bell against Rockland and they answered the bell against Pembroke.”

Senior captain Erik Dean (29 saves) and the Panthers (3-2-1) killed a pair of late power plays to stave off the Titans.

Pembroke got on the board first just 2:40 in with a power-play goal before W-H junior Joe Culley knotted the score at 1-1 with 43.1 seconds remaining in the first period. Sophomore Luke Tropeano and junior Matt Solari picked up the assists. 

The trio then hooked up again with 10:37 left in the second when Culley once again took a feed from Tropeano and Solari and flicked it home for his second of the game and a 2-1 Panthers lead. 

“We’re getting our game going, we’re getting going in stride,” Peters said. “We’re going to keep moving and keep getting better every day.”

Elsewhere around W-H: 


Boys’ basketball (4-2) was in Florida for the Avon Park Tournament. Bob Rodgers’ club tipped off the tourney with a 58-57 victory over Haines City (Florida) on Monday, Dec. 27. Junior Cole Champingie led the way with 15 points, while senior captain Ryan Vallancourt tossed in 13. … On Tuesday, senior Malcolm Alcorn-Crowder registered a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as W-H fell to Cypress Creek (Florida), 71-66, in the second round. Vallancourt scored 19 points in the loss. … The Panthers capped their trip on a high note Wednesday with a dominating 68-27 victory over Hardee County. Vallancourt netted a team-high 13 points in the win. 

Girls’ basketball (6-0) couldn’t have asked for a better trip to Daytona Beach. On Tuesday, Dec. 28, the Panthers opened the Father Lopez Shootout with a 60-22 win over Episcopal School of Jacksonville (Florida). Senior captain Lauren Dunn drained four triples en route to an 18-point outing to pace W-H. … On Wednesday, all 10 Panthers scored in a 69-41 route of The Master’s Academy (Florida). Senior Anna Stone pumped in a game-high 16 points in the victory. … On Thursday, it was the other Stone twin — captain Meg Stone — who netted 16 points as the Panthers wrapped up their trip down south with a 64-21 win over the host, Father Lopez. 

Girls’ hockey (2-3) opened the week with a 3-2 loss to Billerica/Chelmsford on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Senior Caitlin Dilley and junior captain Shea Kelleher each had a goal and an assist. … The co-op bounced back for 5-4 overtime win over Canton on Thursday. Senior Lily Ulvila netted the winner. …. Then on Saturday, Kelleher netted a hat trick, but WH/SL fell to Hanover, 4-3.

Boys’ indoor track on Wednesday, Dec. 29, saw a pair of seniors — Jake Caterer and Nathan Tassey — qualify for the All-State Championship. Caterer did it with a 19-foot-6 long jump, while Tassey posted a time of 10:12.7 in the 2-mile run to qualify.

Girls’ indoor track was also back in action Wednesday, Dec. 29. The highlight? Senior captain Myah Kamperides ran the mile in 5:42.0 to qualify for the All-State Championship. She had already qualified in the 600-meter run and 2-mile run.

Wrestling (6-1) downed Cohasset, 55-24, on Tuesday, Dec. 28. Winners for the Panthers were: freshman Charlie Lussier (106 pounds via pin in 1:19), senior Joe Boss (113; forfeit), sophomore Graham McInnis (120 via pin in 4:29), classmate Austin Gamber (126 via pin in 1:51), junior Aidan Guiliani (132; 2-0), fellow junior Braden Kain (138; 8-0), freshman Cooper Lussier (152 via pin in 1:06), junior Rocco Hanaphy (160 via pin in :42), senior captain Rocco Ruffini (220 via pin in :37) and junior Maddox Colclough (285 via pin in 3:05).

Wrestling sweeps in W-H’s Week 3

The Whitman-Hanson Regional High wrestling team is making some noise. 

On Thursday, Dec. 23, the Panthers swept a tri-meet against Quincy/North Quincy (54-21) and Boston College High (52-30) to improve to 5-1 on the season. Freshman Charlie Lussier (106 pounds), senior Joe Boss (113), sophomore Austin Gamber (126), junior Aidan Guiliani (132) and freshman Cooper Lussier (152) all won both of their matches by pin. Juniors Braden Kain (138) and Rocco Hanaphy (160), senior captain Rocco Ruffini (220) and junior Maddox Colclough (285) also went 2-0 on the day. 

Elsewhere around W-H:


Boys’ basketball (2-1) received a game-high 31 points from senior Amari Jamison and rolled past Hanover, 72-53, on Tuesday, Dec. 21. 

Girls’ basketball (3-0) remained perfect with a 53-34 triumph over Hanover on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Senior captain Lauren Dunn canned six threes en route to a 20-point night to lead the way. 

Boys’ hockey (1-1-1) rallied back from a 2-0 deficit but ended up falling 4-3 in overtime to Plymouth North on Wednesday, Dec. 22. The Panthers’ goals were provided by sophomore Billy Morgan, junior Joe Culley and senior Bobby Hunter. 

Girls’ hockey (1-1) fell to Hingham, 4-1, on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Junior captain Shea Kelleher had the co-op’s lone goal.

Keeping score in Week 4

The first month of the fall sports season is over at Whitman-Hanson Regional High. 

Here are the scores from Week 4: 

Boys’ cross country (3-1) ran past Plymouth North, 21-36, on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Senior captains Nathan Tassey (17:36) and Gordon Johnson (17:56) placed first and second, respectively, while sophomore Logan Bourgelas finished third with a time of 18:20. Also scoring for the Panthers were sophomores Alex Keheyias (seventh, 19:06) and Gavin McCarthy (eighth, 19:07).

Girls’ cross country (2-2) dropped a nail-biter to Plymouth North, 27-28, on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Senior captain Myah Kamperides led the way for W-H with a second-place finish, clocking in at 20:53. Also scoring for the Panthers were freshman McKenna McCarthy (fifth, 22:09), senior captain Sarah Boulger (sixth, 22:20), freshman Adrianna Kelly (seventh, 23:05) and sophomore Caroline Poth (eighth, 23:49.)

Football (0-4) was shut out by Hingham, 35-0, on Friday, Oct. 1. Senior Rocco Ruffini led the defense with nine tackles, including three for loss. Junior Matt Phelps had an interception, while classmate Will Frazier had a tackle for loss and fumble recovery. 

Field hockey (1-5-1) picked up its first victory of the season with a 3-0 shutout win over Duxbury on Thursday, Sept. 30. Senior Ally Ayers opened the scoring in the first half with her third goal of the season, while classmate Joli Flamos and sophomore Paige Cosgrove added some insurance. 

Boys’ golf (2-8) opened the week with a 247-267 loss to Marshfield on Monday, Sept. 27. Senior captain Pat McBroom was again the team medalist, carding a 6-over 42. … On Wednesday, W-H fell dropped a 223-248 decision to rival Duxbury. Despite the loss, McBroom was the match medalist with an 1-over par 35. … On Thursday, the Panthers were clipped by Plymouth South, 253-267. Freshman Cooper Britton led the charge on the day for the home team, shooting his best round of the year with a 6-over par 40 in the loss. 

Boys’ soccer (0-6-2) allowed two goals in the final four minutes and fell to Cohasset, 2-0, on Monday, Sept. 27. … On Thursday, Tony Reis’ club suffered a 5-2 setback against Marshfield. Freshman Jah Estrela scored his first career goal and senior captain Jayden Stafford (also an assist) added another in the loss.

Girls’ soccer (6-2-1) received a pair of goals from senior captain Nora Manning to down Scituate, 4-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Fellow senior captains Olivia Borgen and Ava Melia added single tallies of their own in the win. … Then, behind two goals from junior Kayla Cassidy and another from Melia, W-H topped Marshfield, 3-2, on Friday. 

Girls’ volleyball (6-3) went three-for-three. On Monday, Sept. 27, W-H swept Silver Lake, 3-0 (25-9, 25-16 and 25-9). Freshman Caroline Gray tallied 21 assists, while senior captain Lily Welch led the Panthers with nine kills. … On Wednesday, Samantha Richner’s team swept Scituate, 3-0. The set scores were: 25-22, 25-23 and 28-26. Welch led the team with six solo blocks and 15 kills and Gray added 28 assists in the victory. Senior captain Abby Martin and classmate Riley Scott led the team in digs with 16 apiece. … On Friday, W-H best Marshfield, 3-1. The set scores were: 25-18, 25-21, 17-25 and 25-8. Welch tallied 12 kills and six total blocks and sophomore Riley Codero notched 21 assists at setter in the triumph.

Bright spots in rough Week 2

The second week of the fall sports season is in the books at Whitman-Hanson Regional High.


Here are how the teams fared:

Boys’ cross country (1-1) fell to Marshfield, 21-39, Tuesday, Sept. 14. Senior captains Nathan Tassey (16:53) and Gordon Johnson (17:10) paced the Panthers finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Girls’ cross country (1-1) also fell to Marshfield on Tuesday, Sept. 14 by the final score of 15-50. Senior captain Myah Kamperides (20:14) and freshman McKenna McCarthy (20:24) placed eight and ninth, respectively, to lead W-H.

Field hockey (0-3-1) opened the week with a 2-1 loss to Plymouth North on Monday, Sept. 13. Senior Lauren Dunn knotted the score at 1-1 for W-H, before the Blue Eagles pulled ahead for good. … On Wednesday, the Panthers dropped a 5-1 decision to Hingham. Senior Madelyne Guidaboni had the their lone goal. … On Friday, senior Ally Ayers stuck for a pair and senior captain Olivia Phelps added a single tally as W-H earned a 3-3 tie against West Bridgewater.

Football (0-2) was shut out by Foxboro, 38-0, on Friday, Sept. 17. Junior Will Frazier carried the ball 11 times for 53 yards. On defense, the linebacker duo of junior Evan Casey and senior Jake Guiliani combined for 13 tackles, including three tackles for loss.

Boys’ golf (0-4) suffered a 274-304 setback against Plymouth North on Monday, Sept. 13. W-H senior captain Pat McBroom was the match medalist with a 3-over par 39. … The following day, Brian Dempsey’s club was clipper by Hanover, 248-258. McBroom led all scorers once again, carding a 2-over par 36. Fellow senior captain Matt Casarano turned in a 5-over par 41. … The Panthers closed the week with a 236-306 loss to Hingham on Wednesday. McBroom led the way for W-H with a 4-over par 40.

Boys’ soccer (0-1-2) fell to Plymouth North, 3-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 14. … On Thursday, W-H played to a 2-2 draw against Hanover. Senior Adam Sousa scored both Panthers goals, the first assisted by sophomore Ethan Fostello and the second, unassisted, a strike from 35 yards out.

Girls’ soccer (2-1) dropped its first match of the season, 3-1, to Plymouth North on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Senior captain Nora Manning scored for W-H. … The Panthers rebounded on Friday for a 1-0 win over Hanover. Junior Kayla Cassidy scored the winner two minutes into the second half off a feed from senior captain Olivia Borgen. Freshman Ava Patete stopped seven shots for the shutout.

Girls’ volleyball (2-1) fell to league power Quincy, 3-1, on Wednesday, Sept. 15. The set scores were: 25-23, 8-25, 21-25 and 11-25. Senior captain Lily Welch racked up 19 kills and three solo blocks for W-H, while freshman Caroline Gray tallied a season-high 30 assists. … The Panthers rebounded on Friday for a 3-1 victory over Plymouth North. The set scores were: 25-21, 25-9, 11-25 and 25-20 in their league match. Gray had 23 serves, two of which were aces, to go along with 18 assists, seven assisted blocks and two solo blocks. Senior captain Abby Martin also tallied seven assisted blocks and seven kills, while Welch added seven kills of her own.

Week 1 sees advances, setbacks around fields, court and courses

The fall sport season has begun. So how did the teams at Whitman-Hanson Regional High do in Week 1?


Boys’ cross country (1-0) began its Patriot League Keenan Division title defense with a 26-31 victory over Quincy/North Quincy on Friday, Sept. 10. Q/NQ placed the first two runners but W-H placed five of the next six, led by senior captains Nathan Tassey (third, 17:29) and Gordon Johnson (fourth, 18:21). Sophomores Logan Bourgelas (fifth, 19:19), Alex Keheyias (sixth, 19:33) and Gavin McCarthy (eighth, 19:41) rounded out the scoring.

Girls’ cross country (1-0) also topped Quincy/North Quincy by a final score of 25-32 on Friday, Sept. 10. Panthers senior captain Myah Kamperides finished first overall with a time of 21:12. Freshman McKenna McCarthy placed third overall at 21:37. Senior captain Sarah Boulger (sixth, 23:07), classmate Erin Kelly (seventh, 23:21) and freshman Adrianna Kelly (eighth, 23:56) also scored for W-H.

Field hockey (0-1) was shut out by Marshfield, 1-0, in its opener on Friday, Sept. 10. Seniors Rosie MacKinnon, Ashley Sawtelle and Caitlyn Crowley were standouts on defense.

Football (0-1), despite striking first, kicked off the season with a 33-20 loss to Hanover on Friday, Sept. 10. Senior Andrew Cloutman rushed for two scores, junior Will Frazier added a 70-yard touchdown, while classmate Evan Casey anchored the defense with 12 tackles.

Boys’ golf (0-1) dropped its season opener to Quincy, 266-277, on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Senior captain Pat McBroom led the way for the Panthers with a 7-over par 42.

Boys’ soccer (0-0-1) played to a 2-2 draw against Quincy on Thursday, Sept. 9. Senior Jack Allen knotted the score at 1 for the Panthers off a feed from junior Manny Osorio. Then down 2-1 in the second, Osorio scored the equalizer off a feed from sophomore Cam Cassidy.

Girls’ soccer (2-0) opened the season with a bang, topping Weymouth 5-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Senior Jenna Lindstrom got the Panthers rolling with two goals in the first half, junior Kayla Cassidy added a pair in the second, and then senior captain Olivia Borgen struck for one of her own. Freshman keeper Ava Patete made six saves for her first varsity win. … On Thursday, W-H rolled past Quincy, 7-0. Cassidy added two more goals, junior Maddie Allen also found the back of the net twice, while Borgen, senior Lauryn Fostello and freshman Maddie Fitzgerald added single tallies.

Girls’ volleyball (1-0) opened the 2021 campaign with a 3-0 sweep over Abington on Thursday, Sept. 9. The set scores were: 25-12, 25-13 and 25-14. In her varsity debut, freshman Caroline Gray tallied 27 assists. Senior captain Lily Welch led the team with 10 kills, while classmate Anna Stone racked up nine of her own.

Spring sports regular season nears a close

The final full week of the spring sports regular season is in the books at Whitman-Hanson Regional High.


Here’s how it shook out:

Baseball (8-2) opened the week with a 15-0 beat down of Silver Lake on Monday, May 24. Senior Bobby Marshall struck out nine to pick up the win. Senior Ty Gordon chipped in a bases-clearing double to spark the offense. … On Wednesday, the Panthers topped Marshfield, 7-4. Marshall had three hits, while senior Mike Hutchko picked up his second win of the season on the hill. … On Friday, with the Patriot League Keenan title on the line, W-H fell to Plymouth North, 4-3. The Panthers tied it at three in the fifth but the Blue Eagles plated the winning run in the sixth.

Softball (5-5) fell to Silver Lake, 14-5, on Monday, May 24. Junior Annie Cook led the Panthers with three hits. … On Wednesday, Jordan McDermott’s club dropped a slugfest against Marshfield, 12-11. Sophomore Haley Leeber went 5 for 5 at the plate in the loss. … On Friday, W-H lost a 10-6 decision to Plymouth North. Senior captain Abby Cleary and junior Erin Burke each had solo home runs.

Boys’ lacrosse (2-8) fell to Duxbury, 18-1, on Tuesday, May 25. … On Thursday, the Panthers fell to Plymouth North, 12-4.

Girls’ lacrosse (3-6-1) lost to Duxbury, 16-2, on Tuesday, May 25. … On Friday, AC Decker’s team closed out the regular season with a 9-4 win over Marshfield. Senior Bryn Miller and sophomore Ella Nagle each had two goals and two assists, while juniors Joli Flamos and Emily Leitch anchored the defense.

Boys’ outdoor track (0-2-1) fell to Marshfield, 95-41, on Tuesday, May 25. Junior Jake Caterer picked up wins in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and triple jump

Girls’ indoor track (1-1-1) also fell to Marshfield, by a final score or 105-31, on Tuesday, May 25. Senior Madison Scaccia was a standout for the Panthers with wins in the 100-meter dash (:12.9), the long jump (14 feet, 11.5 inches) and the triple jump (32 feet).

Boys’ tennis (3-7) opened up the week with a 3-2 win over Silver Lake on Monday, May 24. Senior captain Cameron Lindsay and brother teammate Zach Lindsay took care of their opponents at the first doubles position, 6-1, 6-1. Freshmen Tristan Baker and partner Nate Burt also won in the second doubles spot, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Sam Ennis clinched the win for W-H in third singles, 6-2, 6-1. … Josh Lopes’ squad made it three straight wins on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over Marshfield. Junior Aidan Hickey (6-1, 6-3) won in third singles, Ennis (6-2, 6-2) won at No. 3 singles, the Lindsay brothers (6-4, 6-2) took care of business in No. 1 singles and Baker and Burt (6-2, 6-2) secured the win in second doubles. … W-H wrapped up the regular season with a 4-1 loss to Plymouth North on Friday. Baker and Burt had the Panthers’ lone point with a win in second doubles, 6-2, 7-5.

Girls’ tennis (2-8) was edged by Silver Lake, 3-2, on Monday, May 24. … On Wednesday, W-H was shut out by Marshfield, 5-0. … The Panthers closed the week with a 4-1 loss to Plymouth North on Friday.

Wrestling (4-3) took down Marshfield, 48-24, on Wednesday, May 26. Junior Joe Boss (113 pounds) and senior captain Declan Hanapy both won via pin, while sophomore Aidan Guiliani (126), freshman Grady Maynard (132), junior captain Pat Collett (145), senior captain Damari Goldsmith-Greene (160), junior Rocco Ruffini (220) and sophomore Maddox Colclough (285) also had wins. … On Friday, W-H defeated Scituate, 48-24, but fell to Bridgewater-Raynham, 48-18, in a tri-meet. Boss, Guiliani, Goldsmith-Greene and Ruffini were all double winners for W-H.

A busy week of spring sports action

Baseball (4-0), behind a complete game from senior Bobby Marshall, rolled past Hingham, 7-2, on Tuesday, May 11. Marshall gave up no earned runs and stuck out five Harbormen. Hartford University-bound senior Danny Kent had three hits to spark the offense. … On Wednesday, sophomore Connor Sottak launched a pinch-hit, three-run home run as Pat Cronin’s squad topped Silver Lake, 6-2. … The Panthers capped a perfect 3-0 week with a 4-1 win over Marshfield on Friday. Senior captain Tommy Marshall drove in two in the victory.

Softball (4-1) dropped a 6-3 decision to Hingham on Tuesday, May 11. Senior captain Abby Cleary hit a solo home run in the fifth. … Jordan McDermott’s team bounced back the following day, rally past eight-in-a-row Patriot League Keenan Division champion Silver Lake, 10-6. W-H trailed by three heading into the fifth before it was able to break away. Sophomore Allison Larkin went three for four at the dish, highlighted by a solo home run. … The Panthers posted another comeback win on Friday, rallying from five down in the seventh to edge Marshfield, 7-6, in extra innings. Larkin leveled the score at six in the seventh with a three-run homer. Senior captain Emily McDonald scoring the winning run in the eighth on a passed ball.

Boys’ lacrosse (1-4) opened the week with a 16-4 setback to Plymouth South on Tuesday, May 11. … On Thursday, W-H fell to Division 2 power Hingham, 19-1. Senior Aiden McCarthy had the Panthers’ goal off an assist from his younger brother, Gavin McCarthy, a freshman. … On Saturday, the other McCarthy brother, freshman Connor McCarthy, struck for four goals to propel W-H past North Quincy, 7-2, and into the win column for the first time this spring.

Girls’ lacrosse (1-2-1) routed Abington, 16-3, for its first win of the season on Monday, May 10. Junior Tiffany Joyce paced the offensive attack with two goals and three assists. Seniors Brynn Miller, Katie Mulligan and junior Jackie Keenan all had three goals and an assist in the win. … On Tuesday, the Panthers rallied back from five down in the fourth to tie Plymouth South, 14-14. Sophomore Ella Nagle paced the offense with three goals and an assist. On Thursday, W-H jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead but it didn’t last as it fell to Hingham, 20-3. Nagle had two goals in the defeat, while Joyce added the other.

Boys’ outdoor track (0-1) fell to Duxbury, 92-52, on Tuesday, May 11. Senior captain Theo Kamperides posted wins in the mile and 2-mile runs.

Girls’ outdoor track (1-0) came out on top in its opener with an 87-49 victory over Duxbury on Tuesday, May 11. The Panthers were led by senior Madison Scaccia, who had wins in the triple jump (30-foot-1) and 200-meter dash (:29.41), and junior April Keyes, who won in the 400-meter hurdles (:71.5) and 100-meter hurdles (:17.77).

Boys’ tennis (1-3) fell to Hingham, 5-0, on Monday, May 10. … The Panthers rebounded on Wednesday for a 3-2 win over Silver Lake for their first victory of 2021. At the first doubles position, senior captain Cameron Lindsay and his brother, sophomore Zach Lindsay, won in two sets, 6-4, 6-3, while freshman duo Tristan Baker and Nate Burt made short work of their opponents at second doubles, winning 6-0, 6-3. Junior Will Mulligan clinched the victory with a win in third singles, 7-5, 6-4. … On Friday, W-H was clipped by Marshfield, 3-2. Junior Aiden Hickey won in first singles, 6-4, 6-2 and the freshman duo of Baker and Burt continued to play well, winning their match at the second doubles spot, 6-3, 6-2.

Girls’ tennis (1-3) fell to Hingham, 4-1, on Monday, May 10. Senior Julia Benvie scored W-H’s lone point with a win at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3. … On Wednesday, the Panthers topped Silver Lake, 3-2, for win No. 1 of the year. Seniors Rylie Harlow and Nora Rooney won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, and the second doubles tram of seniors Erin Tilley and Kyla Faghan won, 6-1, 6-2. Benvie picked up the third point win a win in No. 2 singles in a tiebreaker. On Friday, W-H fell to Marshfield, 3-2. At No. 2 singles, Benvie won in a super breaker third set, 10-4. Tilley and Faghan won in second doubles, 6-4, 6-1.

Wrestling (0-1) opened its first ever spring season with a 42-24 loss to Silver Lake on Wednesday, May 12. Sophomore Aiden Guiliani (126 pounds) and senior captain Damari Goldsmith-Greene (152) both won via pin; Guiliani’s came at 1:42, while Goldsmith-Greene’s was at 2:25. Senior captain Aiden O’Brien (138) and junior captain Pat Collett (145) also collected wins.

Spring sports make comeback

Spring sports are finally back in action.


The wait is over.

For the first time in two years, spring sports are back in action. Here’s how the first week shook out at Whitman-Hanson Regional High:

Baseball (1-0) opened the season with a 5-0 win over Duxbury on Thursday, May 6. Senior captain Tommy Marshall went the distance on the mound, striking out nine Dragons for the complete-game shutout. Senior Ty Gordon led the way on offense with a hit and 2 RBIs.

Softball (2-0) banged out 16 hits and edged Duxbury, 5-4, on Thursday, May 6. Sophomore Haley Leeber led the offensive attack with three hits, including a two-run home run. Senior captain Abby Cleary tossed a complete game, fanning five Dragons to pick up the win. … On Saturday, sophomore Lauryn Meade fired a no-hitter, punching out 15 in five innings, and also blasted a two-run homer, to lead W-H past East Bridgewater, 12-0. Sophomore Olivia Turocy also left the yard, launching a grand slam in the third inning.

Boys’ lacrosse (0-2) opened the season with a 12-5 loss to Silver Lake on Thursday, May 6. … On Saturday, W-H surrendered a goal with one second remaining and dropped a heartbreaker to East Bridgewater, 8-7, the final.

Girls’ lacrosse (0-1) began the season with a 17-7 setback against Silver Lake on Thursday, May 6.

Boys’ tennis (0-1) was shut out by Duxbury, 5-0, on Thursday, May 6. The freshman duo of Tristan Baker and Nathan Burt played well in doubles.

Girls’ tennis (0-1) was also shut out by Duxbury, 5-0, on Thursday, May 6.

Cup full of action

The regular season has come to a close and the postseason has begun. And with no state tournament to play in, the Whitman-Hanson Regional High athletic teams took their shots at the Patriot Cup.


Boys’ cross country, bolstered by senior captain Theo Kamperides’ (16:49) first-place finish, took first at the Patriot League championships on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Senior captain Liam Cafferty (fifth, 17:40), junior Nathan Tassey (seventh, 17:58) and senior captain Chris MacDonald (ninth, 18:15) finished in the top 10.

Girls’ cross country closed its season with a sixth-place finish at the Patriot League championship on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Junior captain Myah Kamperides paced W-H, finishing ninth overall with a time of 21:01.

Field hockey (2-9-1) shutout Marshfield, 1-0, in the first round of the Patriot Cup on Monday, Nov. 9. Junior forward Olivia Phelps found the back of the net, breaking a scoreless tie five minutes into the third quarter, off a feed from senior captain Lauren Clark. … On Wednesday, W-H’s run came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Silver Lake.

Boys’ soccer (6-7) kicked off cup play with a 2-1 win over Hanover on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Senior captain Brendan Nehiley and junior Jayden Stafford had the Panthers’ goals. … On Thursday, the W-H dropped a heartbreaker to Duxbury, 3-2, in double overtime. Senior captain Peyton Collins had both goals in the loss.

Girls’ soccer (9-2-2) dropped a 3-1 decision to Scituate on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Junior Ava Melia had the lone goal. … The Panthers lived to see another day though, since they were the two seed in the Keenan Division and made the most of it, knocking off Plymouth North, 1-0, in overtime on Saturday. Senior captain Alexis Billings scored the goal off a shot from fellow senior Anna Sullivan. Senior captains Kylee Colcough and Reese Codero combined for the shutout.

Girls’ volleyball (3-10) dominated Pembroke, 3-0, in the first round on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The set scores were: 25-18, 25-16 and 25-16. Juniors Abby Martin and Lily Welch paced the Panthers with six kills apiece. … On Thursday, W-H was knocked out by Plymouth North, 3-0. The set scores were: 21-25, 23-25 and 22-25. Senior captains Caileen Hurley and Sophia Berardinelli were standouts in the defeat.

Ups and downs on the playing fields in Week 5

The fall sports season is beginning to wind down at Whitman-Hanson Regional High.


Here’s a look back on Week 5:

Boys’ cross country (5-0), led by a first-place finish from senior captain Theo Kamperides (16:34), edged Marshfield, 26-29, on Wednesday, Oct. 28 to capture the Patriot League Keenan Division title for the first time since 2013. Senior captain Liam Cafferty (17:04) placed fourth, junior Nathan Tassey (17:09) came in fifth, while senior captain Chris MacDonald (17:37) came across the finish line sixth. 

Girls’ cross country (2-3) fell to Marshfield, 17-46, on Tuesday. Oct. 27. Junior captain Myah Kamperides (20:20) paced W-H with a fourth-place finish. 

Field hockey (0-7-1) suffered a 5-1 setback against Plymouth North on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Junior Olivia Phelps had the Panthers’ goal. 

Boys’ soccer (4-4) beat Silver Lake, 2-1, on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Sophomore Manny Osorio and junior Jack Allen scored for W-H, both coming on assists from senior captain Peyton Collins. Senior Randy Elfman had some key saves late. 

Girls’ soccer (7-0-1) shut out Silver Lake, 3-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Junior Olivia Borgen scored twice and sophomore Kayla Cassidy added a goal in the win. Senior captains Kylee Colclough and Reese Codero split the duties in net to earn the shutout.

Girls’ volleyball (2-7) opened the week with a 3-0 sweep over Silver Lake on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The set scores were: 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18. Junior captain Lily Welch paced W-H with 10 kills, junior Abby Martin tallied nine, while senior libero Sarah Byers racked up 12 digs. Senior captain Sophia Berardinelli recorded 27 assists, a season-high for the setter. … On Friday, W-H was shut out by Plymouth North, 3-0. The set scores were: 20-25, 22-25 and 5-25. Junior Anna Stone and Byers had 16 serve receives apiece in the loss.
