Season Review: Girls’ volleyball doubles win total

The Panthers were two wins away from making the tournament, and they certainly had their chances.

Whitman-Hanson Regional High girls’ volleyball team second-year head coach Ashley Balbian strongly believes her team had what it takes to make the postseason, despite falling short.

The Panthers finished the fall with an 8-11 record, which doubled their win total from the previous season, and put them two victories away from the playoffs.

Of those 11 losses, three times the Panthers jumped out to advantages and twice took a 2-1 lead into fourth the set, only to have their opposition to battle back and claim the victory.

“I feel like that was our biggest challenge once we got halfway through the season, we could be successful in many one or two sets and we just couldn’t sustain it,” Balbian said. “It’s a long stretch of time, but just keeping our energy up and positivity was hard for us sometimes.”

Balbian said the biggest difference between this season’s team and last fall’s club was experience. The Panthers returned nine players, all of whom received playing time at the top level.

“I had so many girls returning on varsity,” Balbian said. “They had been playing together obviously last year but throughout the summer. A lot of them played on club teams together, which was helpful. I expected that this team would do well.”

But what Balbian didn’t expect was the starting lineup she’d be penning in at the end of the season. All five of the Panthers’ seniors ended the fall as starters, which was not foreseen going into the season. Kayla Crawford worked her way up to starting defensive specialist, Kylie Gervasio became a starting setter and Erin Leahy started at middle hitter. Seniors Allison Hanlon starred at outside hitter and Nicole Scott at libero, and both were league all-stars.

“I’m proud of them for [starting] because I wasn’t expecting all of the seniors to necessarily be starting,” Balbain said. “I’m proud they were able to earn those spots in the end and play together really well. That was huge for us.”

Hanlon registered her 200th career kill in the final game of the season, a 3-2 win over Bridgewater-Raynham.

“That’s a huge deal,” Balbian said.

Balbian did have some players set to return sprinkled in her lineup as well with junior captains Olivia Martin at right side hitter, Lexi Connolly at outside hitter, classmate Ella Sweeney at middle hitter and sophomore Caileen Hurley at setter.

“I want to see them be more confident on the court,” Balbian said. “I want to see them play together as much as possible.”

Gervasio settles into setter role

October 11, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Kylie Gervasio has found her own on the court and in the school since joining the girls’ volleyball team.

Coming into the season, Whitman-Hanson Regional High girls’ volleyball head coach Ashley Balbian had a question mark penciled in for a key position — setter.

Little did she know that area of concern would be shored up by someone who last played competitively over 2,600 miles away in senior Kylie Gervasio.

Gervasio and her family moved from Whitman to Arizona when she was 10, only to return at the beginning of last year’s school year. Unfortunately for her, their move back occurred after tryouts so she missed the season.

For Gervasio, who played the sport throughout middle school and high school, not competing in nearly two years was tough, but when the season inched closer, she made sure to sharpen her skills.

“When I knew tryouts were coming up, I went out to the beach and volleyball courts with my best friend Jennifer and we practiced because she’s also a volleyball player and she helped me get back into it,” Gervasio said.

Balbian said Gervasio’s positive energy at tryouts caught her eye immediately and blended in with the rest of her returners.

“Even if she shanks a ball she’s still got a smile on her face,” Balbian said. “So right away I was like ‘I know I want her on my team.’”

That positive energy Gervasio and her Panthers teammates convey has made her joining the roster, which consists mostly of girls she had never met prior to tryouts, a seamless transition she said.

“Everybody here is so helpful and sweet,” said Gervasio, who has accumulated 93 assists in 24 sets. “Everyone is so cheerful and excited to play and always pumped up going to games. They made coming on to the team not feel weird.”

Joining the volleyball team has just provided it with a boost, but its benefited her as well.

“Being new and everything last year, I had trouble making friends,” Gervasio said. “Being on the volleyball team and everything, I’ve never felt more enjoyment in going to school.”

Balbian said the Panthers’ 3-2 victory over Hanover on Sept. 17 (14 assists) and their 3-1 loss to Hingham on Sept. 28 (15 assists) stick out among many strong efforts put forth by Gervasio. Balbian said she expects to see much of the same production from her senior as the season wears on.

“She’s really been a game-changer for us,” Balbian said. “I knew I had one setter coming into the season. I wasn’t sure who was going to be my backup setter so she came in as the backup and now is the starter. I think she really had taken on that leadership role the more comfortable she gets.”

Season Preview: Girls’ volleyball ready to carry over last fall’s late-season success

Panthers are looking to continue their upward trend this season.

It was an end of the season that had Whitman-Hanson Regional High girls’ volleyball head coach Ashley Balbian wishing last fall would never end.

Sitting at 2-17 with two contests remaining, the Panthers won out, defeating Middleboro and Bridgewater-Raynham — both by 3-1 scores — in a three-day span as it all started to come together.

“I think at the end we kind of found our groove,” Balbian said. “We had a lot more energy. A lot of younger girls felt more comfortable right as the season was ending, so now those girls are the leaders now so I could tell first practice that was the team, even better than before.”

Now the Panthers are back on the court, and Balbian, who is entering her second year leading the them, couldn’t be more ready to go.

“I’m really excited,” Balbian said. “I think that the girls coming in are just night and day compared to last year. They’re like different players. They’re more comfortable on the court, they’re confident and they’re having fun.”

Nine players return from last fall, all of whom received playing time.

“It’s invaluable,” Balbian said of her returning players’ experience. “I can already see the difference in practice.”

The Panthers do have their fair share of losses though. Halle Jillian (the program’s all-time blocks leader on record), Amanda Anderson and Tori Perry leave big holes.

Senior Nicole Scott and juniors Lexi Connolly and Olivia Martin replace Anderson and Julian as captains.

“I think it’s great to have three captains because the more, the better and they’re great leaders,” Balbian said. “They’re really positive and they always have a smile on their face.”

Scott, who was on junior varsity last season, brings an outsider perspective to the Panthers, which can’t hurt.

“I think from watching on the outside and coming in this year, I’ve realized we do need that more competitive edge,” Scott, who will play libero, said. “It’s good to keep each other positive after games but we got to take the next step and say, ‘Okay, what can we do to get better?’”

Connolly and Martin had big sophomore seasons. Connolly, an outside hitter, played in 52 of 75 sets and registered 92 attack attempts, 22 kills and 70 digs. Martin, a right side hitter, played in 59 sets, had 18 kills and 61 digs.

Both Connolly and Martin agreed, expectations are heightened this season.

“Last year was a building year,” Connolly said. “This year is definitely going to be better.” Said Martin: “[We want to] build on last year’s record.”

Middle hitter Ella Sweeney is also another key returnee for the Panthers, and she’s only a junior as well. She played in all but one set last season and posted 98 kills and 62 blocks.

“She has that experience,” Balbian said. “She brings that positive energy. She’s got that upbeat energy, which I think really adds to her as a player.”

Senior Allison Hanlon will provide a steady presence at outside hitter.

As for strengths, Scott pointed to the Panthers’ togetherness, something she watched work to their advantage last season as well.

“The home game where we played Duxbury – they’re such good competition,” she said. “They’re so good – there was one set where we weren’t ever ahead of them but we were so close and you could just tell we were having fun. We weren’t stressed. We weren’t mad or upset. We were just having fun and it definite ly showed on the court.”

The Panthers will be back on the floor Friday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. at home against Patriot League foe Plymouth North.

“I want to see them come out strong [and] confident,” Balbian said.

Rejoining a W-H teammate at Curry: Anderson commits to play volleyball

May 17, 2018 By Nate Rollins, Express Sports Correspondent

Amanda Anderson, a senior at Whitman-Hanson Regional High, will continue her volleyball career at Curry College next season.

Whitman-Hanson Regional High senior Amanda Anderson has committed to play volleyball at Curry College.

A key factor in Anderson’s decision was the ability to reunite with former W-H girls’ volleyball teammate and good friend Jordyn Keith, a rising sophomore on the Curry women’s volleyball team.

“I went to one of her games in September and October and then in between that time I also visited their school and talked to the coach there,” Anderson explained. “And then he saw me playing for my club team. Once I saw their team play, I really wanted to join the team. Jordyn was always talking about how great her new coach is and stuff and it made me excited to talk to him and stuff, too.”

Anderson was a two-year starter at outside hitter for the Panthers and co-captained the club this past season. She ended her career with 104 digs, 94 kills and 76 aces.

“Amanda had been preparing to be a senior varsity captain her whole volleyball career and fit in naturally to the role working along with Halle (Julian),” first-year W-H girls’ volleyball head coach Ashley Balbian, who coached Anderson at the junior varsity level her sophomore season, said. “In my opinion, what made her excel was her positive outlook and attitude.”

Anderson dealt with her fair share of adversity on the court. After an injury cut short her junior campaign, she fractured her foot in the first practice of this past season. While the injury kept her out of game action for the opening month, it didn’t hinder her from making a making a positive impression.

“Of course, she was upset but bounced back and showed up the next day on crutches asking what she could do to help,” Balbian said. “During the season when our record wasn’t great and Amanda was stuck on the bench she set such a great example for her teammates and younger girls in the program. Her positive encouragement while injured became an inspiration for us. I really respect how she handled that whole situation.”

While Anderson provided the younger girls an example on the bench, she did in practice as well, leading the junior varsity and freshman teams in a variety of drills during the course of the season.

“Helping the younger girls is very good for our program for getting them stronger to be good players and be leaders and take over Halle and my spot,” Anderson said. “I love helping them because I want them to fill in my shoes when all the seniors are gone to keep the program going and winning games.”

Anderson’s work with the younger players shined at its brightest in the Panthers’ final contest of the fall, a 3-1 win over Bridgewater-Raynham. After starting her regulars, Balbian lifted them in the second set and inserted a bevy of girls who had come up from junior varsity, many that Anderson mentored.

“It made me feel proud of being their captain and looking back and knowing that it was because of all us seniors who helped get them this far,” Anderson said. “And definitely keeping the attitude going because that’s how people win games, you have to keep your attitude very positive at all times.”

Anderson said her fondest memory on the court at W-H came during her junior season in a 3-2 victory over Pembroke.

“We were in the fifth set and it was 13-13 and there was a play where the ball went up and I had to kill it and I broke the tie and then it was 14-13,” she explained. “The moment was so intense and it was so awesome because all I saw was Halle looking at me and she’s like, ‘Don’t mess up.’

“And I got it and she got the winning point right after me and that was the best feeling in the whole world getting those two points because it felt like the most intense game we’d ever played as a team.”

Balbian said Curry is receiving a natural leader on and off the court in Anderson.

“Curry College is getting a dedicated student athlete who is excited about her major in psychology but also passionate about playing volleyball and being part of a team,” Balbian explained.

Curry, which competes in the Commonwealth Coast Conference of NCAA Division III, finished 11-18 last season.

“I definitely want to improve on my back row playing time and my hitting on certain spots and stuff like that,” Anderson said. “Just like little detail things to help me improve and get better. The goal of all of it is to be a starter on their team, but it’s going to be a lot of work.”

Season Review: Young volleyball team impresses

Whitman-Hanson Regional High girls’ volleyball, despite finishing the season with a 4-17 record, made significant strides this year.

Sometimes success doesn’t just show up in the win column.

Whitman-Hanson Regional High girls’ volleyball, despite finishing the season with a 4-17 record, made significant strides this year.

W-H came into the year with a tall task – trying to make up for the production it lost via the departure of a seven-player senior class – headlined by captains Jordyn Keith, Sophie O’Brien and Chloe Roberts – who played an integral part in helping the program reach the tournament in back-to-back seasons.

With that many seniors on the roster last season, that meant playing time for the younger players was scarce. Four players who would turn into regulars on the court this fall had little to no experience as the varsity rank.

Junior Allison Hanlon, and sophomores Olivia Martin and Ella Sweeney were all previously penned on the JV roster. Sophomore Alexis Connolly had just 15 sets of varsity experience under her belt. This season, Sweeney was in action for 74 sets, which was tied for the second-most on the team, as Hanlon and Martin played 66 and 59, respectively. Connolly saw her time on the court rise to 52 sets.

The growing pains, however, were evident, as the Panthers went nearly a month without a single win. But, they never lost faith.

“We were able to stay up despite how many losses we took,” first-year Panthers head coach Ashley Balbian said. “But, I think the team really worked together. The chemistry between the girls, especially between the really young girls and the seniors, I think that was definitely our strength in just trying to keep the energy up, fight for every point.”

After a loss to Quincy on Oct. 25 dropped W-H to 2-17 with senior night against Middleboro in less than 24 hours, Balbian said there was an instant shift in the mentality of her squad.

“I think a lot of what changed is kind of a change in our mindset about seniors thinking like this is our last two games we’re going to put it all out there,” she said. “Then for the underclassmen to come in and think, look we want to do this for the seniors. [We’re] putting our effort in for the seniors the last two games, but also realizing we’re it next year, this is it, so we have to step it up.”

After celebrating the storied careers of their seniors, the Panthers downed the Sachems in four sets, 3-1. Senior Halle Julian led the club with 18 kills and classmate Tori Perry shined with 40 assists. Two days later, they finished off Bridgewater-Raynham in another four-set affair, 3-1.

The recent success left Balbian thinking a few things. “I wish we had five more games,” she said. “I had felt we finally hit a lot of the goals we were working towards all season, and then just as we hit that stride the season [is] over.”

But, there is no denying that finishing your campaign on a two-game winning streak must build some assurance about the future.

“It was huge boost in confidence, especially for the girls that are younger on the team and were getting more time on the court, and they feel a little more prepared coming in with the seniors leaving next year,” Balbian said.

As they look ahead to next season, the Panthers will be tasked with replacing the leadership and production from departing seniors Madison Adams, Amanda Anderson, Cathryn Johnson, Julian and Perry, all of whom left their stamp on the program, according to Balbian.

“I think that they have left such an impression on the younger players, like really kept a high standard on the team,” Balbian said.

For W-H, despite the struggles, the team should come into its own in the not so distant future.

“A lot of them came into new positions, especially towards the second half of the season,” Balbian said. “They kind of found what works for them. Maybe they decided I want to be a libero or I want to be a setter or I want to play front row, and they kind of found where they fit on the court. It makes me already excited for tryouts next season.”
