Don’s Barber Shop has hired a new barber to fill Don Botieri’s shoes after his retirement in December. Lucy Cobb is the newest addition to the sports barber shop located at 500 Liberty Street. She may be new to the shop, but she has 20 years of experience cutting hair. Cobb grew up in Hanson and six years ago owned Hanson Barber Shop. She has also worked at Rocco’s Barber Shop in Scituate and Frank and Vinny’s Barber Shop in Canton for 10 years. “My family has generations of barbers… from my great grandfather to grandfather and uncles and cousins,” Cobb said. “It’s been in the genes for years.” Cobb’s mother and sister were also hairdressers. Working at Don’s Barber Shop has been something Cobb has hoped for since her graduation from Mass School of Barbering in Quincy. Cobb has been working at Don’s for close to a month and she said she loves the atmosphere. “I love working here. It’s very easy-going,” she said. “If I don’t know someone I usually know someone they know.” Cobb said that she has formed very good relationships with her clientele over the years. She also said she feels she has become very good friends with people she has worked with in the industry. Cobb is the first female barber that has cut hair at Don’s Barber Shop and she was also the first female barber in her family. Cobb said her interest in barbering began when she was just a little girl. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “My uncle had a barber shop and I always hung out there.” The barber shop displays Don Botieri’s passion for all sports. He played baseball while stationed in Germany, and the shop displays memorabilia of many of the Hanson baseball teams he managed in the 60s, including T-shirts hanging from the ceiling. Botieri also had several pictures of his customers receiving their first hair cuts. “It’s the best shop I’ve ever been in,” she said. Don’s Barber Shop is the only sports barber shop in Hanson. Mike Rizzo, Don’s right hand man, said that before they hired Cobb the shop was very busy with just him working. He said that he is very happy to have her as the new addition. “Lucy and I fight everyday, because we like each other,” Rizzo said. Rizzo worked with Don Botieri for 15 years and has been a barber for 45 years. Don’s Barber Shop has been at its current location for 16 years and was across the street for 42 years, Rizzo said. “It was a lot of fun, we had a lot of laughs,” Rizzo said. “[Don] was an enjoyable person to work with.” Rizzo said two people working side by side tend to get to know each other really well. Over the years some customers have joked they left the barber shop straight when Rizzo cut their hair, but when Don did it they had to leave tilting their head sideways, Rizzo said laughing. Don comes in to talk to the guys on Friday mornings and sometimes get a haircut himself, Rizzo said. |
