Most Valuable Player Kyle Daigneault - Football Daigneault was the workhorse running back this season that the Panthers had missed in their 2008 and 2007 campaigns. The senior halfback shouldered most of the burden offensively for Whitman-Hanson, even more so after quarterback Joe White’s season-ending injury, and finished 10th in the state in scoring in Division 2A with 86 total points while rushing for 14 touchdowns and over 1,600 yards. Samantha Mewis - Soccer The Patriot League did not get a proper introduction to Mewis last season, when she missed most of the high school season with the U.S. National team, but she wasted little time getting acquainted this year. Mewis was third in the league in goals with 22 and fourth in scoring with 32 points, and was the coaches’ selection for best player in the league. She also scored seven goals and added two assists in the MIAA tournament. Rookie of the Year Nick Santos - Soccer Santos made the varsity roster as a freshman this season and earned himself the starting forward position by the end of the year. Santos found the back of the net five times for the Panthers with one assist during the regular season, and had his best game of the year during their preliminary round win over Dighton-Rehoboth when, he scored two of the Panthers’ three goals. Abby & Rachel Baker - Cross Country Head coach Keith Erwin said before the season that he hoped the freshmen twins would work their way into the top five by the end of the season, but he didn’t have to wait that long for the Bakers to make an impact. Both sisters began picking up points for the Panthers early in the season, and stepped up in the wake of injuries to help the team go undefeated this season. Both Bakers also helped the Panthers finish the season fifth in the state at the All State meet. Player to Watch in 2010 Tyler Sullivan - Cross Country Sullivan continued to build off an impressive sophomore season with a successful junior season. After a slow start, Sullivan earned himself a place at the All State meet with a nice performance during the rain-soaked Eastern Mass. Championships and finished the season as the fifth best Division I runner in the state. After his race at All States, he said he hoped to be back next season with the entire team and hopes to lead them there in his final high school season. Britnie & Brianna Heinricher - Volleyball Both sisters made the most of their first year at the varsity level and gave the Panthers solid play at the net despite a tough season for the volleyball team. Both will likely have bigger roles next season with the losses of Annie O’Donnell and Marissa Visocchi, and will have to continue to improve for the Panthers to return to the MIAA tournament. |
