The Board of Health held a hearing with Kevin Coakley, owner of the South Ave. bar The Office, to discuss repeated open door violations during their meeting Tuesday at Town Hall.  

Health Agent Eric Badger said there have been repeated complaints about the bar leaving their doors open and propping doors open, which could allow insects and mice to get into the kitchens.

“If I get enough complaints about one place, I go talk to them and if I continue to talk to them, we bring them before the board because it’s becoming a problem,” Badger said. “They’re leaving everything open.”

Coakley said he has already fired one employee because of the problem and promised to “cooperate with the board 100 percent.”

“I don’t care what law it is, if you ask me to do it it’s going to be done,” Coakley told the board. “You’ve been very, very cooperative and you’re not going to see it again.”

Badger also noted that there have been no problems with the food or cooking conditions at the bar when he has inspected.

Also during their meeting, the board laid out the agenda for the Mosquito Awareness Forum at the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School on Thursday. The forum is designed to inform residents on ways to help combat the spread of EEE and West Nile Virus over the summer by controlling the spread of mosquitoes. Badger said one of the biggest issues is stagnant water in abandoned pools that becomes breeding grounds for the insect.

“It’s a big deal with all the foreclosures,” he said. “With the rain this week and if we get humidity next week, its going to be a problem.”

Badger also presented positive results of his inspections of the two Dunkin Donuts in town, the Council on Aging and East Coast Amusements.

 He said the Bedford Street Cumberland Farms inspection also went well with the exception of expired Lays and Tostitos potato chips, which has been a problem with a few stores in town . He will get in touch with the local supplier.

Badger also said there had been a recall of bean sprouts at Johnnie’s Foodmaster and they had removed them from the shelves.
