Believe it or not, we are already eight weeks through the winter season. While some regular seasons wind down at Whitman-Hanson Regional High, a few squads are still making a playoff push, while one has already punched its ticket to the postseason.
Boys’ basketball (10-4) topped Scituate, 70-63, Tuesday, Jan. 30 to kick off the week. Senior Josh Genereux paced the Panthers with 18 points while classmate and captain Sean Leahy put up 17. On Friday, W-H defeated Plymouth North, 70-53, qualifying it for the Div. 2 tournament for the 10th straight season. Leahy led the way with 19 points and fellow senior captain Jacob Hanson-Bartlett added 12.
Girls’ basketball (10-5) dropped a close 48-44 decision to Scituate on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Junior captain Erin Leahy scored a team-high 11 points in the defeat. On Friday, Jenna Olem’s team rebounded to collect a 57-49 triumph over Plymouth North, putting it one win away from clinching a postseason berth. Junior captain Kathryn Dunn spearheaded the W-H offense with 17 points and senior captain Alyssa Nicholson turned in an 11-point, eight-rebound evening.
Girls’ hockey (1-13) dropped an 8-1 decision to Duxbury on Monday, Jan. 29. On Saturday, WHSL, which was leading 1-0 after the first period via a goal from freshman Emily McDonald (Whitman), fell to Quincy/North Quincy by the final score of 5-2. Sophomore Natalie Nemes (Kingston) supplied the other tally.
Boys’ hockey (7-8-1) was defeated by Duxbury, 4-1, Wednesday, Jan. 31. On Saturday, Chris Googins’ team fell to Scituate, 4-1.
Wrestling (8-12) capped off its regular season with a quad-meet Saturday, Feb. 3. The Panthers collected wins over Norwood (46-36) and Everett (30-24) before falling to Bristol Plymouth/Coyle & Cassidy (64-18). Junior Joel McInnis (145 pounds) went 3-0 on the day.
Girls’ swimming/diving (5-3-1) lost to Scituate, Tuesday, Jan. 30. On Saturday, in the sectionals meet, sophomore Madison Navicky placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with 2:24.88 and classmate Niki Kamperides placed 10th in the 50-yard freestyle with a 31.37.
Boys’ swimming/diving (3-5) dropped its contest to Scituate on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Freshman Brian Pham qualified for sectionals in the 500-yard freestyle. On Saturday, in the sectionals meet, Pham placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:06.09.
Gymnastics (9-4) dropped a 136.85-129.5 decision to Hanover on Wednesday, Jan. 31. W-H’s senior Britney Blackstone won the all-around performance with a mark of 36.25. On Friday, the Panthers beat Scituate, 129-116, but fell to Pembroke, 131.15-129.95.
